Having an outside provider handle your web hosting is almost always a good idea. Most small businesses aren't equipped (knowledge or money) to run and maintain a reliable, secure web service with firewall protection and 24/7 support. We use FluidHosting for our web site. Plans start around $15 per month.

This e-mail solution filters out viruses and spam with amazing accuracy! It also protects your network and mail gateway from viruses and Internet attacks. The service work best with an Internal company mail server like Exchange or Collax. We use this internally and get NO SPAM. ZERO. Plans start at $30/mo for up to ten users. This brand-new service (Reflexion Archiving, Discovery and Recovery) is complete e-mail protection. Every message your company sends or receives is archived, backed up, and available on our secure servers in case of a problem with your local e-mail server. Archived messages can be searched, filtered, and reproduced on-demand...with old tape backups this would take months, if it was even possible! More info coming soon.

Would you run your car without a fuel gauge? That's how it is to run a computer network without monitoring. Offerings range from the basics (is the server up?) to more advanced hardware/software monitoring.

Operating System Patching

Just set Windows Updates to automatic and be done with it, right?

Wrong.

There have been a handful of patches released for Windows XP and server products that caused unintended conflicts with other operating system components. In other words, the patch did more harm than the vulnerability. While rare, these problems can and do happen.

On the other hand, an un-patched Windows Server has a "half life" of less than two hours on the Internet before one can expect it to be compromised. We manage around 100 PCs and servers at this time, so we know what to look for. We read the logs and reports from the user community, as well as directions from the software companies themselves.

Application Patching

More than Windows...there have been reports of vulnerabilities in Quickbooks, Flash plug-in, Quicktime video player, Java processor...so "just" keeping up with Windows Updates isn't enough. We'll check the programs installed on your server and PCs and make sure they are up-to-date and secure.
